Get Your Kids Involved in Decorating: Easy DIY Watercolor Wall Art

Get your kids involved in decorating with this quick and easy DIY watercolor framed wall art. Such a fun project to help love your home.

My home certainly reflects my personal tastes and style sure, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t keep my family in mind when decorating or choosing new pieces to go in our rooms. In fact, I try to always make sure that I include things that will benefit them or give them pride in their own spaces.

DIY art project

I knew I wanted to get my toddlers involved in decorating their new playroom and the easiest solution was to have them create their own artwork for the walls.

Now, my kids love to color and draw so I thought I could nail this project with some blank paper and fun bingo dot markers. Nope, apparently, when I want them to create artwork on demand they’re totally not interested. Figures.

PLAN B – diy watercolor wall art

I happened to come across these really inexpensive white floating frames at Target on my lunch break. Since most of our furniture in the playroom is white I figured it would be a nice touch to accent some of the rustic wood tones we already had in the room.

Realizing my kids might need a bit more motivation to help me out with this project, I picked up some watercolor paints on my way to get them from daycare. A few things crossed my mind when buying paint for them:

  1. They’re totally gonna love this idea since I’ve never let them paint before
  2. Chaos will surely ensue, because well, sharing and toddlers
  3. How many minutes will the paint survive before they turn all the colors black from mixing them?

To answer my own questions…

  1. Yup, over the moon excited
  2. Good thing the paint came in separate trays to avoid forced sharing
  3. Surprisingly a long time….a few days and still going strong

Turning Masterpieces into Wall Décor for the Playroom

My kids had a blast creating their own artwork to display in the playroom. They thought it was so neat that I was going to put them in their own frames and were beaming with pride the entire time they were painting their little hearts out.

I was actually pretty impressed with their creations.

Once the paint dried, which was pretty quickly, I went to work taking the frames apart.

I planned to use the same size template as the stock photo insert to cut out the kids artwork, but I realized the standard 8×10 size wasn’t as big as I wanted it to be. I ended up just keeping their original paper size and removing the perforated edge.

Assembling floating frames can be a bit tricky. To avoid your artwork from sliding around between the glass pieces make sure to use something clear and tacky to adhere the back of your artwork to the back glass panel.

I’m so glad I didn’t cut their artwork down to a smaller size. This is the perfect amount of clear glass surrounding the pictures.

This was such an easy and quick way to add a pop of color to our neutral playroom and I love it! I’m sure we’ll be changing the artwork out frequently, and I’m even considering buying some more frames for the other blank spaces on the sides of our windows.
